A bad toothache can ruin anyone’s day whether you are an adult or child. Potential causes of toothache: it’s not always a tooth cavity
- Dental cavity or tooth decay – this is the most common cause of toothache and caused due to decay of outer layer of tooth by acid produced by bacteria in plaque which leads to stimulation of pulp which leads to pain.
- Tooth corrosion – Wearing of outer layer of tooth due to gastric acid from acid reflux or diet acid.
- faulty restoration or fractured tooth – loose seal of restoration may lead to infiltration of bacteria which can irritate pulpal tissue which leads to pain. Fractured tooth leads to exposure of nerves which also leads to pain.
- Resent dental work- deep restorations, metal restoration or faulty prosthesis may cause pulpal inflammation which leads to pain.
- Periodontal abcess or periapical abcess –
Periapical abcess – it is a result of bacteria from dental caries invading into dental pulp which leads to pain and accumulation of pus near the apex of the infected tooth root.
- Gums recession – gums may receds over time due to improper brushing technique or inflamed gums due to accumulation of dental plaque.
